The United States calls to hold the Assad regime accountable
The US Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Linda Thomas Greenfield, affirmed that her country calls for the establishment of a judicial mechanism to hold the Assad regime accountable for its crimes against Syrians, with the aim of punishing it for genocide against thousands of civilians in Syria.
Greenfield said, during an informal session of the Security Council on holding perpetrators of war crimes accountable in Syria, that her country supports the work of the Independent Investigation Commission, international organizations and the United Nations mechanisms that work to collect evidence that documents the crimes of the Assad regime and ISIS.
Greenfield added that achieving justice in Syria is important for bringing justice to hundreds of thousands of civilian victims killed by the Assad regime, noting that this step is important for the implementation of Resolution 2254, which calls for a political solution in accordance with international resolutions, according to what the Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper reported.
She pointed to the importance of holding the perpetrators of crimes in Syria accountable, such as the Nuremberg trial over the Nazi massacres against the Jews, saying: “The victims of the Syrian war must be given justice.”
The American delegate to the United Nations praised the efforts of the German government, which seeks to prosecute the perpetrators of genocide against the Syrian people.
Yesterday, Tuesday, the UN Security Council held an informal session to listen to individuals and organizations on matters that fall within the council’s competence. Three Syrian activists participated in the session.
During the session, Syrian activists called on the international community to hold the Assad regime accountable for its crimes against Syrians.
