Pedersen announces the principles that will be discussed during the Syrian Constitutional Committee meetings
United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, announced the basic principles that will be discussed during the seventh session of the Constitutional Committee meetings in the Swiss capital, Geneva.
Pedersen confirmed on Sunday that he met with the Co-Chair nominated by the Syrian opposition and the Co-Chair nominated by the Assad regime, and they agreed upon the agenda which includes four principles that shall be discussed during this week through the Constitutional Committee meetings.
Pedersen said: the four items are “The first is Basics of Governance, the second is the State Identity, the third is State Symbols, and the fourth is Structure and Functions of Public Authorities, and we will spend one day on each principle.”
Pedersen pointed out that Syria is still one of the biggest and gravest crisis in the world. He also said that there is a need for progress towards a political solution to end the crisis.
He continued: “let me be careful by saying whether there are reasons for optimism or not, I think if the three delegations do what they have said they will do, I hope that we can see some steady progress. But I should emphasize that I had good meetings with the two Co-Charis in preparation for this meeting.”
The work of the seventh round of the Syrian Constitutional Committee meetings will start in Geneva today, Monday, in the presence of members of the two delegations: the Syrian opposition and the Assad regime, after its work has stopped for five months without making any significant progress during its previous meetings.
