Aboul Gheit: The return of Syria to the Arab League will take several years
The secretary-general of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, confirmed in an interview with Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper that ” he hadn’t monitored an Arab tendency to return Syria to its seat in the Arab League.”
The Secretary-General of the Arab League stated: “Syria will eventually return to occupying its seat in the Arab League, but this matter may be at the next summit, and perhaps the return will take several years.”
He noted: ” Syria is an Arab country whose membership in the League has been suspended due to a situation that has not undergone a major change. But 11 years have passed since the time of the freeze.
He also said: the matter of sending an invitation to Bashar al-Assad to attend the Algeria summit wasn’t addressed in the League, explaining that it requires Arab consensus.
A year ago, Russia officially announced efforts to restore the Assad regime to the Arab League, at a time when the Assad regime was suffering from isolation and a stifling regional state.
