Kyiv announced it has reached an agreement with Russia to evacuate civilians from the besieged city of Mariupol
Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk said today, Wednesday, that Kyiv has reached an agreement with Russia on establishing a humanitarian corridor for civilians from the besieged city of Mariupol.
Iryna Vereshchuk added that this agreement is the first of its kind since last Saturday. We were able to communicate with the Russians to evacuate the children and women trapped in the city, according to Agence France-Presse.
The Ukrainian official indicated that the evacuation of civilians will be to the southern city of Zaporizhzhia, stressing that the tragic situation in Mariupol makes them focus more on evacuating civilians.
Since last Saturday, no humanitarian corridor has been opened for the city, which is under a suffocating siege by the Russian forces. Russia have recently intensified the bombing on the city’s neighborhoods.
According to the Ukrainian authorities, 300,000 Ukrainians have been evacuated since the start of the war on February 24, and more than 340 humanitarian corridors have been proposed, but Russia has only agreed on 300.
