Ukrainian President meets senior US officials in Kyiv
Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, met yesterday with US secretary of state Antony Blinken and secretary of defence Lloyd Austin in the capital, Kyiv. It was the first visit by senior US officials to Ukraine since the start of Russia’s invasion.
The two officials said during their visit to Kyiv “the gradual return of American diplomats to Ukraine began this week, and the United States will continue to support Ukraine against the Russian invasion” , according to Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper.
The two officials confirmed that Washington pledged an additional more than $700 million in military assistance, including about $300 million to help Ukraine buy essential weapons.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that US President Joe Biden plans in the coming days to nominate the current US ambassador to Slovakia, Bridget Brink, as the new ambassador to Kyiv.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his gratitude to US President Joe Biden for his support of Ukraine during its war with Russia.
On February 24, Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine. To end the operation, Russia requires Ukraine to abandon any plans to join military entities, including the (NATO), and to adhere to complete neutrality, which Kyiv considers an “interference in its sovereignty.”
