Istanbul hosts the Global Conference on Migration and Refugees
The Global Parliamentary Conference on Migration and Refugees begins today in Istanbul to discuss several issues organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union with the collaboration of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye, and with the participation of parliaments of member states, observers and associates of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
The sessions will discuss the agreements of migration and asylum and address the illegal immigration, combating organized crime, sharing the responsibility for immigration/asylum burdens, and the Turkish experience in hosting migrants and refugees, scheduled to be held today and tomorrow, Tuesday.
The conference aims to collect a series of the best parliamentary practices on the issue of migration, and to identify the concrete steps that parliaments can take to promote stronger international cooperation and national implementation.
The conference provides parliamentarians with an opportunity to assess the status of implementation of global agreements and the challenges associated with this issue by taking stronger collective, bilateral and national action.
Deputy Interior Minister Ismail Çatakli will deliver the keynote speech, and then the mayor of Gaziantep, Fatima Shahin, will talk about her municipality’s experience in dealing with refugees, through the session devoted to the experience of the Turkish state as it hosts the largest number of refugees in the world. It is likely that the Turkish government will submit its plan to establish a “safe zone” and the housing projects it supervises in northern Syria and the possibility of cooperation with the participating countries during the conference.
