A British organization raises half a million dollars to support the displaced in northwest Syria
The British “HALO Trust” organization has raised nearly half a million dollars to support the displaced in northwestern Syria, coinciding with the “World Refugee Day.”
The organization issued yesterday a statement on its official website saying, “We are pleased to announce on World Refugee Day that players of Edinburgh-based People’s Postcode Lottery have raised £400,000 ($491,000) for our work in the Northwest of Syria.
The organization explained that this funding will help to save the lives of refugees and internally displaced people by finding and destroying the explosives . The funding will also allow us to work in more towns, villages and refugee camps in Northwest Syria, and to help the victims of conflict and explosive contamination who need treatment.
The organization indicated that it has been working since six years to remove landmines and explosives and teach people how to stay safe in Syria. Our survey and mapping teams have found that 1.6 million people in northwest Syria live close to unexploded shells, bombs, and landmines.
Laura Chow, the head of charities at People’s Postcode Lottery, said: “We are delighted that the funding will support the organization in its efforts to protect civilians living in war.”
James Cowan, HALO’s chief executive, said: “The needs of Syrian people are greater than ever, as the new funding allow us to provide valuable assistance to save the lives and help people access desperately-needed medical care.”
On June 10, the HALO Trust organization warned that the explosion of weapons remnants threatens the people in northwestern Syria, especially after a town in Idlib northern countryside witnessed a strong explosion of an ammunition depot.
