UN official: Suspending the mechanism of cross-border aid delivery to Syria would be a catastrophe
The UN’s deputy regional humanitarian coordinator in Syria, Mark Cutts, said: “If cross-border humanitarian aid delivery mechanism to Syria suspends, it will be a catastrophe amid the absence of any alternatives.”
Cutts warned in statements quoted by AFP, “The failure to renew the resolution will be a catastrophe because there is no alternative currently available than can substitute the scale or scope of what the UN is doing.”
He clarified that “it is very necessary to keep the lifeline going in this region because it includes the most vulnerable populations in the world.”
He added, “We know things have become this year more politicized than the previous years, as the tensions are high with the war in Ukraine.”
The UN mandate of aid delivery through the Bab al-Hawa border crossing with Turkey into Syria expires on the tenth of this month.
According to the data of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), about 2.4 million Syrians benefit monthly from the aid that the United Nations delivers.
