The Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on the extension of aid delivery mechanism into Syria after it failed to adopt a resolution
The UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting Monday on the extension of humanitarian aid delivery mechanism through the Bab al-Hawa crossing to northwestern Syria.
The Turkish Anadolu Agency quoted diplomatic sources at the United Nations as saying: “some amendments introduced to the joint Irish-Norwegian draft resolution on extending the UN mandate for a year, which Russia vetoed it on Friday.”
The agency did not clarify the content of the amendments to the resolution, and it is unknown whether they will meet the Russian demands or not, according to the agency.
The UN Security Council failed to agree on the renewal of humanitarian aid delivery mechanism to Syria through the Bab al-Hawa crossing, in its first session last Thursday.
Two draft resolutions were submitted during the session , one of them presented by Russia that called on extending the mandate for 6 months, and the other one presented by Norway and Ireland to extend the mandate for 12 months.
Negotiations are continuing at the United Nations regarding the extension of aid delivery mechanism which has been in effect since 2014, permitting the international organizations to deliver humanitarian aid across the border to millions of people in northwestern Syria, which expired at midnight yesterday, Sunday, after Russia vetoed a UN Security Council draft resolution that would have extended cross-border aid mechanism by one year without Assad regime’s approval .
The United Nations and relief organizations have warned of a “humanitarian catastrophe” after Russia vetoed the UN Security Council resolution that would have extended cross-border aid delivery to northwestern Syria.
