Erdogan visits Tehran to discuss bilateral and regional relations, including the Syrian file
The Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will travel Today, Monday, for an official visit to the Iranian capital, Tehran, for two days, at the invitation of its President Ebrahim Raisi.
The Turkish Presidency issued a statement on Sunday in which it clarified that Erdogan and Raisi will co-chair, on Tuesday, the seventh meeting of Turkey-Iran High Level Cooperation Council.
The concerned ministers from both countries will participate in the meeting to discuss all aspects of Ankara and Tehran’s relations and potential steps that would enhance the bilateral cooperation.
The statement added that Erdogan and Raisi are set to discuss regional and international issues of mutual interest.
The statement indicated on the sidelines of the visit that the Turkish president with his Iranian and Russian counterparts would participate in the seventh trilateral summit meeting in Astana format on the Syrian file, which will also be held in Tehran.
The statement stated that the tripartite summit will also discuss counter-terrorism that pose a threat to the region’s security, foremost of which are the terrorist Syrian Democratic Forces and the ISIS organization, and efforts related to the political solution in Syria.
The meeting will also discuss the humanitarian situation and the voluntary return of Syrian refugees. Erdogan is set to hold bilateral talks with his Russian counterpart, Putin, on the sidelines of the tripartite summit.
It is noteworthy that Iranian Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, visited Turkey and met his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu on June 27. Abdollahian declared, “We understand Turkey’s security concerns very well in Syria and Turkey’s propose to carry out a special military operation there at the same time.”
