UN calls for isolating the meetings of the Syrian Constitutional Committee in Geneva from Ukraine
Yesterday, the UN called for isolating the meetings of the Syrian Constitutional Committee in Geneva from the Ukrainian war, which was forcibly stopped by Russia, and put the Syrians’ interest first.
Pedersen’s spokeswoman Jenifer Fenton said that the Assad regime delegation “had informed Pedersen that his delegation would be ready to participate in the ninth round if Russia’s requests have been met.”
Fenton “urged all parties to put a firewall to protect the Syrian process from the impact of the conflicts elsewhere in the world.”
Fenton stated that in 2018 when the constitutional committee was proposed, one of its conditions was that it “would hold its meetings in Geneva without foreign interference.”
The ninth round of talks between the Assad regime and opposition delegations was scheduled to be held in Geneva between 25 and 29 July, under the supervision of the United Nations Special Envoy to Syria Geir Pedersen.
The US embassy in Syria had previously tweeted that “efforts of Russia and the Assad regime to undermine the ninth round of the Syrian Constitutional Committee meetings show their indifference to a better future for the Syrians.”
