Russia: The situation on Turkish-Syrian border remains difficult and can be resolved
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin confirmed that the situation on the border between Turkey and Syria remains difficult, but it can be resolved if the concerns of both sides are taken into consideration.
The Russian news agency TASS quoted Vershinin as saying by addressing the concerns of both sides on the basis of firm commitment to Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, the situation can be resolved.
Vershinin made it clear that the result would be beneficial not only for both countries, but also for the entire region’s stability.
Vershinin added that Russia is closely pursuing the developments in Syria, including in the border area.
He pointed out that “We appreciate our cooperation within Astana format, and it was very useful in promoting reconciliation in Syria,” pointing out that the launch of the Constitutional Committee and its work process, as well as the lines of communication between the two sides, became possible due to Astana format and the cooperation between Turkey, Iran and Russia.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has previously reaffirmed “the importance and urgency of establishing a safe zone in northern Syria, in accordance with the 2019 agreement between Turkey and Russia.”
