Human Rights Watch: Arab countries should recognize that they are dealing with a “brutal” regime

Human Rights Watch said in a statement on Tuesday that many Arab countries have rushed to normalize relations with the Assad regime, since the catastrophe of the devastating earthquake, without pressing for accountability for the crimes it committed.

The statement added that the Arab countries that seek to normalize relations with the Assad regime must recognize that they are dealing with the same person who disappeared millions of Syrians and committed flagrant humanitarian violations.

Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry visited Damascus on Monday to emphasize his country’s solidarity with Syria facing the devastating earthquake that hit Syria on November 6.

Bashar al-Assad welcomed on Sunday a delegation from the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union in the capital, Damascus. This visit comes days after Bashar al-Assad visited to the Sultanate of Oman, which is his second visit to an Arab country since 2011.

The head of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union Mohammed Halbousi previously announced that it was decided to form a delegation from the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union to visit the Assad regime, during the final statement of the 34th Conference of Arab Inter-parliamentary Union.

Al-Halbousi considered that Syria in recent days has gone through difficult circumstances due to the devastating earthquake, and we must strive and continue the duty of support until the repercussions of the crisis and its difficult effects are cleared.”
