Pedersen is discussing with Lavrov ways to support the political process in Syria
The UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen affirmed during his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow the need to reconvene the Syrian Constitutional Committee as soon as possible.
Pedersen tweeted that he discussed with Lavrov ways to strengthen the political process in Syria, in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2254, taking into consideration the recent international and regional developments.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Lavrov discussed with Pedersen normalizing relations between Assad regime and the Arab League and Turkey.
The two sides discussed supporting the political process in Syria under the auspices of the United Nations and in accordance with UN Resolution 2254. They also discussed the issue of humanitarian assistance to Syria, according to the statement.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin met Pedersen on Wednesday, and discussed with him in detail the problems of the Syrian settlement within its regular framework in the UN Security Council.
He stressed the importance of advancing the political process, led by the Syrians and with the support of the United Nations, while respecting Syria’s sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity.
It is noteworthy that the last meeting between Lavrov and Pedersen took place on February 27, and during the meeting they discussed the file of humanitarian assistance to Syria, after the disaster of the earthquake that hit northern Syria and southern Turkey on February 6.
