Russian Foreign Ministry: Participants in the Astana meeting discussed the roadmap for normalization between Ankara and Damascus
The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying: “The deputy foreign ministers of Russia, Iran, Turkey and the Assad regime discussed, at the Astana meeting, the elements of a road map to restore relations between Damascus and Ankara.”
The meeting was attended by Deputy Foreign Ministers of Russia Mikhail Bogdanov, Iran’s Ali Akbar Haji, Turkey’s Burak Akshapar, and the Assad regime’s Ayman Soussan.
The statement added that “according to the agreements reached at the Moscow meeting on May 10, the participants began discussing the elements of the road map to restore relations between Damascus and Ankara at the official level of the two countries, in coordination with the work carried out by the two ministries of defense and the intelligence services.”
The Russian presidential spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, had warned of high expectations in the 20th round of the “Astana” talks on Syria.
Peskov called for not setting too high expectations from the Astana meeting, adding that “this is a very long way, and Russia continues its firm position.”
It is noteworthy that on Tuesday morning 20th round of Astana meetings on Syria began in the Kazakh capital, with the participation of delegations from Syria and the guarantor countries of the Astana process, Russia, Iran and Turkey.
