U.S. condemns that Russia vetoed a resolution to extend aid delivery into Syria
The United States condemned on Tuesday the inhumane veto resolution, which Russia used against renewing aid delivery mechanism into Syria through Turkey.
U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said at the daily press conference that the mechanism provides life-saving aid to millions of people in northwestern Syria.
Dujarric emphasized that United Nations’ Secretary-General António Guterres was disappointed that the Security Council has failed to extend the authorization of cross-border aid mechanism.
Dujarric stated that Guterres has urged all members of the Security Council to exert every effort to obtained the approval on extending the aforementioned mechanism.
The Spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State, Matthew Miller, confirmed in a regular press briefing on Tuesday that Russia’s use of its veto power against renewing a UN humanitarian operation to provide aid to 4 million people in northwestern Syria is “inhumane.”
Miller said that “We have been saying that the UN Security Council should authorize a 12-month extension of cross-border access into Syria to ensure this vital lifeline is available to the Syrian people”.
This humanitarian mechanism, which began in 2014, allows aid delivery for 4 million people in Syria, and it is renewed annually.
