Turkish newspaper: There are signs of an upcoming meeting between Erdogan and Bashar al-Assad in a border area
A Turkish newspaper revealed signs of a possible meeting between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Bashar al-Assad, which would probably take place next August at a checkpoint on the Syrian-Turkish border.
The Turkish newspaper “Turkey” said: “Turkish officials and others from the Assad regime held three rounds of talks during the past month about normalizing bilateral relations and organizing this first meeting between Erdogan and Bashar al-Assad.”
The newspaper made it clear: “Initially, Iraq was discussed as a place for Erdogan and Bashar al-Assad to meet, but Ankara focused on an alternative option, which is the Kasab border crossing between the two countries.”
The newspaper pointed out: “It is expected that the process will develop quickly and that the two sides will take pictures together in August at the latest.”
On the other hand, Russian sources familiar with Bashar al-Assad’s recent visit to Moscow denied that Russian President Vladimir Putin had asked al-Assad to meet with Erdogan, and confirmed that this issue was not discussed during the visit, according to the “Russia Today” website.
The sources confirmed, “The relationship between Bashar al-Assad and Turkey must be based on foundations and references regarding the Turkish withdrawal from Syrian territory, as well as the fight against all terrorist organizations in northern Syria.”
The spokesman for the ruling Justice and Development Party in Turkey, Omer Celik, previously revealed that preparations were being made for a meeting between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Bashar al-Assad, but no date or place has been set yet.
Meanwhile, the Turkish newspaper “Daily Sabah” reported that a meeting will soon bring together Erdogan and Bashar al-Assad in Moscow next August, indicating that Putin will mediate the talks between them.
