The Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria warns against a catastrophic conflict threatening Syrians everywhere

The Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria confirmed that Syria is dragged into a catastrophic conflict that will engulf it amid the threats facing Syrians everywhere.

The chair of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria, Paulo Pinheiro, said: “The return of Syrians who are afraid of persecution in their home country confirms the hard choices they are facing.”

Pinheiro’s statements came before the UN General Assembly, pointing out that many women and children have started journeys fraught with peril into Syria alone due to the well-documented patterns of arbitrary arrest, forced conscription, and forcibly recruiting men in military service age.

Concerning the family members of male adults, Pinheiro made it clear that they have either stayed behind or restored to risky travel depending on smugglers.

Pinheiro revealed that the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria is investigating reports about Syrians returning from Lebanon that are subjected to abuse, detention or falling victim to extortion by the violent armed actors at checkpoints.

Pinheiro called on all actors to “immediately stop these violations against them,” noting that “the time has come to publicly commit to ensuring respect for the rights of those fleeing, regardless of their origin.”

These violations include the continuation of Assad regime to torture and disappear detainees while in detention despite the International Court of Justice’s order to take all measures within its power to prevent such violations.
