Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper: Senior Russian delegation will visit Damascus soon

A Russian source revealed the intention of Moscow to send a high-level delegation to Damascus soon to initiate a comprehensive dialogue with new Syrian administration regarding laying the necessary foundations to arrange the future relations between the two countries at the political, economic, and military level.

The source said to Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper that the Russian delegation headed by Mikhail Bogdanov, Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister and Special Presidential Envoy to the Middle East and North Africa, and it is set to meet the Syrian new leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, the Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani, and other officials.

Russian sources suggested that the discussion between Damascus and Moscow could address the issue of granting the ousted Bashar al-Assad asylum along with his family members, and the possibility of Moscow playing a positive role to advance the internal national dialogue through coordination with the actors.

The source pointed out that the Russian delegation holds specific proposals for cooperation during the next stage in the file of military presence, especially since Moscow announced its welcome to the opportunities to benefit from the military bases on the Mediterranean, to stimulate the entry of humanitarian and economic aid.

The source suggested that the situation of Russian companies that obtained rewarding contracts in Syria would be between the files presented to the research.
