World Food is blowing alarm bells after the high price of food in Syria
Yesterday, Wednesday, the World Food Program announced that alarm bells were sounded after the increase in the prices of basic foodstuffs (bread and fuel) in Syria.
The program tweeted on its Twitter account, saying: “The prices of basic foodstuffs in Syria rose by 247% last year, making life more difficult than ever before.”
The program added that it provides life -saving food to about 4.8 million Syrians every month, noting that “the increase in food prices in Syria coincides with the 80% increase in the exchange rate of the Syrian pound against the dollar.”
And the Assad regime’s raising of the prices of basic foodstuffs (bread and fuel) caused the price of all other foodstuffs to rise automatically in the country.
“The UN agency is increasingly concerned about the impact of the ongoing economic downturn in Syria, including rising food prices in a context in which more than 11 million people urgently need humanitarian assistance,” said the spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric.
The World Food Program needs $ 15 billion next year, of which only $ 5 billion to avoid famine and $ 10 billion to implement the agency’s global programs, including for malnourished children.
