Five European countries hold the Assad regime responsible for the failure of the Constitutional Committee’s work
Five European countries that are members of the UN Security Council (Estonia, France, Ireland, Belgium and Germany) held the Assad regime responsible for the failure of the work of the Syrian Constitutional Committee, and the lack of any progress in this regard.
This came in a joint statement issued by the five ambassadors of the European countries, following a briefing by UN envoy Geir Pedersen, about the failure of a political solution in Syria.
According to the statement, the Assad regime continues to obstruct the political process and the work of the Constitutional Committee, by refusing to engage constructively with the proposals of the UN Special Envoy and the Syrian opposition.
He added, “Despite the five rounds of negotiations that took place during the past year and a half, we regret the lack of substantive progress in these meetings towards drafting a constitutional reform.”
The statement pointed out that the Assad regime’s delegation refused to engage constructively with the proposals of the Special Envoy and the Syrian opposition, which resulted in the absence of a draft constitutional reform, in line with Security Council Resolution 2254.
The ambassadors stressed “the need to organize free, fair and transparent elections, run under the auspices of the United Nations, with the participation of all Syrians, including the diaspora, with a comprehensive political transition, and the release of detainees.”
