Lavrov discusses with the Secretary of the Arab League the latest developments in Syria
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov discussed with the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the latest developments in the Middle East and Syria.
During the meeting, the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States stressed the importance of reaching a political solution in Syria that meets the aspirations of its citizens and preserves the country’s unity, independence, sovereignty and Arabism, and the need to support political settlement tracks in both Yemen and Libya, according to a statement published by the Arab League.
Aboul Gheit called for what he described as continuing to play a positive role in this direction, and warned against what he described “the dangers of regional interference in the internal affairs of Arab countries,” and what these interventions lead to in terms of prolonging the existing conflicts and increasing their complexity, according to him.
The talks of the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov with the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, a month after his Gulf tour, in Moscow’s endeavor to restore the Assad regime to the League of Arab States, and a group of Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia and Qatar, affirm that Syria’s seat in the Arab League will not be occupied.
The political transition was not achieved according to UN Resolution 2254.
