Putin: There is a glimmer of hope to resolve outstanding issues and build mutual trust with the United States
Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed yesterday, Wednesday, that he “has no illusions after his summit with his American counterpart Joe Biden, but there is a glimmer of hope for building mutual trust and an agreement to resolve all outstanding issues with the United States.”
Putin said during a press conference held after the end of his meeting with Biden in the Swiss city of Geneva, that the meeting contradicted strategic stability, trade relations, regional security, and cybersecurity.
He indicated that he “agreed with Biden to resume the work of diplomatic missions between the two countries, and to start consultations between the Russian and American foreign ministries on all areas of cooperation, foremost of which is cyber security.”
He pointed out that “most of the cyber attacks in the world are carried out from within the United States,” and added that “Washington has declared Russia an enemy, and both countries suffer the losses of sanctions.”
On Ukraine, Putin said, “We have only one obligation towards Ukraine, which is to implement the Minsk agreements if Kiev is ready.”
From time to time, clashes erupt in Donbass, eastern Ukraine, between government forces and pro-Russian separatists who declared their independence in 2014.
In February 2015, the warring parties in eastern Ukraine reached a ceasefire agreement in the Belarusian capital, Minsk, which provides for the withdrawal of heavy weapons and foreign forces from Ukraine, in addition to Ukraine’s control of its entire border with Russia by the end of 2015, which has not yet been achieved.
