“International Crisis Group”: Washington’s amendment to the sanctions law supports early recovery that benefits Syrians
Heiko Wimmen, director of the Syria program at the International Crisis Group, said, “Washington’s amendment to the sanctions law on Syria reduces criticism that it affects the Syrian people more than the Assad regime.”
In an interview with The National newspaper, Heiko Wimmen indicated that the US Treasury’s amendment defines the difference between early recovery support that Syrians benefit from and reconstruction that the Assad regime is working to benefit from.
Last Wednesday, the US Treasury Department amended the sanctions imposed on the Assad regime to include non-governmental organizations in Syria.
This is according to a statement issued by the Treasury, which stated that it had “amended the sanctions imposed on the Assad regime to expand the current mandate related to certain activities of non-governmental organizations in Syria.”
