The UNICEF records 750 attacks on educational facilities in western Idlib countryside
The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) said in a statement that Assad regime forces and Russia carried out more than 750 attacks on educational facilities and personnel in Syria since 2011. The last attack killed four children yesterday as the Assad regime forces shelled a school in Maarat al-Naasan town in Idlib countryside, northwestern Syria.
The UNICEF confirmed the killing of four children when they were on their way to school with over 70% of all children killed in the country in the last year from the northwest, home to one million displaced children.
The statement stressed that “Every child has the right to go to school in safety. schools are not a target, they are a place of sanctuary where children should learn and be safe.”
Assad regime forces and Russia shelled with heavy artillery a school in Maarat al-Naasan town in northwest Idlib which is a new violation of a cease-fire in de-escalation areas.
The Syrian Civil Defense said in a statement that Assad regime and Russia’ attacks killed 47 civilians, including women and children. The Civil Defense managed to rescue more than 100 injured people by the attacks in northwest Syria.
It is noteworthy that Turkey, Russia and Iran announced in May 2017 that they had reached an agreement to establish a “de-escalation zone” in Idlib, as part of the “Astana” meetings related to the Syrian issue, but the Assad regime forces are constantly bombing the area, despite the ceasefire agreement signed on March 5 2020.
