An international organization stresses the need to extend aid delivery mechanism into northern Syria
The International Refugee Organization issued a report, calling for extending “cross-border” humanitarian aid delivery mechanism into Syria and clarifying the impact of blocking aid on the lives of thousands of displaced people in northern Syria.
The organization confirmed in its report that the increase of tensions between Russia and the West concerning the war in Ukraine had reignited the fears over Russia’s use the veto power to prevent the renewal of humanitarian aid delivery mechanism into Syria through “Bab al-Hawa” border crossing.
The report clarified that the resolution to block cross-border aid causes the closure of the Syria Cross-Border Humanitarian Fund (SCHF), one of the largest funds in which the total aid amounted to approximately $154.5 million for 2021.
The International Rescue Committee had previously issued a statement, calling the UN Security Council to ensure access humanitarian aid to Syrians through extending cross-border humanitarian aid delivery mechanism for at least an additional year. The Committee indicated that 4.1 million people in northwestern Syria rely on humanitarian assistance to meet their basic needs such as food, shelter, and health care.
