U.S Ambassador to the United Nations: “The Security Council will hold a critical vote and we cannot let the Syrians down”
US Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas Greenfield, said through a series of tweets on “Twitter”, that Washington “will, once again, vote to reauthorize the Bab al-Hawa crossing, stressing that “we cannot fail the Syrian people.”
Greenfield confirmed that the Security Council will “hold a critical vote” this week on Ireland and Norway’s draft resolution to renew the UN cross-border humanitarian aid mechanism. She also said, “I urged every Council member to join us and vote on the resolution.”
Greenfield explained that last June, she visited the Bab al-Hawa border crossing, which allowed aid to reach 2.4 million Syrians in need each month. She said, “This visit was different from my visit in 2021, and I have rarely seen such desperation in the eyes of aid workers.”
Greenfield affirmed that “we cannot let these aid workers down, but more importantly, we cannot let the Syrian people down,” stressing that “we must come together, with one collective voice, and do the right thing by renewing the mandate for another 12 months.”
It is noteworthy that the UN Security Council votes today on extending the mandate of Resolution 2585, to continue the cross-border humanitarian aid deliveries to Syria.
