Jordan’s foreign minister meets Assad regime’s foreign minister in Damascus to focus on the political solution in Syria
Al-Watan newspaper, which is close to the Assad regime, reported that ” Jordan’s foreign minister Ayman Safadi arrived in Damascus on Monday in an official visit to meet Assad regime government’s foreign minister Faisal al-Mikdad.
The newspaper added that “The visit of Jordanian foreign minister Ayman Safadi will focus on bilateral relations and the Arab efforts based on the political solution to the Syrian crisis.”
The Jordanian relations with the Assad regime witnessed a remarkable normalization between the two countries in 2021, as several high-level meetings took place between the two sides.
At the Jeddah Consultative Meeting, which was held on April 15, for the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council, Jordan, Egypt and Iraq regarding Syria, the Jordanian Foreign Minister reviewed the initiative based on direct Arab-Syrian engagement. The initiative’s aim is to reach a political solution to the Syrian crisis that preserves Syria’s unity, cohesion and sovereignty, and restores its security, stability, and role, and creates the conditions for the voluntary return of refugees, and rids Syria of terrorism.”
The Jordanian initiative includes “a joint Arab peace plan that could end the devastating consequences of the Syrian crisis. The basis of the plan is a step-by-step initiative, and it discusses launching a leading Arab role, after years of failed international efforts to resolve the conflict.”
