US State Department: We support Syrian opposition’s role to reach a political solution in line with UNSCR 2254
US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, Ethan Goldrich, said that the United States supports the Syrian opposition’s role to reach a political solution in Syria in line with UNSCR 2254.
Goldrich’s statement came on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meetings as he convened meetings with UN Special Envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, and they discussed the ongoing efforts to achieve a Syrian-led political solution.
Goldrich affirmed that the goals of the American policy in Syria are concentrated on improving the humanitarian situation, holding Assad regime accountable for human rights violations, and combating terrorism.
Goldrich held a meeting earlier describing it as “fruitful” with a number of Syrian opposition leaders and emphasized during the meeting the United States’ support for their role in searching for a political solution in line with UNSCR 2254. He also stressed his country’s commitment to support a political process that meets the Syrian people’s demands and leads to a just conclusion.
The US Department of State posted on its official account a video clip for Goldrich, in which he said that he is attending the 78th sessions of the UN General Assembly meetings to work on the issues related to Syria to help achieving the goals of UNSCR 2254 regarding Syria.
The UN Secretary-General António Guterres said previously at the opening of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly in New York that “Syria remains in ruins while peace remains remote”.
