ICJ fixes 3 February 2025 as a final date for Assad regime’s trial
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) fixed 3 February 2025 as a final date to submit complaint memorials in the case filed by Netherlands and Canada against Bashar al-Assad for violating the convention against torture (CAT).
ICJ said in a statement on “X” platform on Friday, 9 February 2024, “It fixed 3 February 2025 & 3 February 2026 as the respective time-limits for the filing of the memorial of the applicants and the counter-memorial of the respondent to consider the case filed by Canada and Netherlands against Bashar al-Assad.”
ICJ received last June a complaint submitted by Canada and Netherlands against Assad regime for not fulfilling its commitment regarding preventing torture in prisons and other forms of cruel and inhuman treatment.
Canada and Netherlands have previously filed a joint complaint against Bashar al-Assad in the International Court of Justice with charges of committing torture crimes against Syrians, in addition to, countless violations of international law, beginning at least in 2011.
Canada and the Netherlands have asked the ICJ to issue emergency orders for the Assad regime to take measures, including ceasing all acts of torture and cruel treatment and ending arbitrary detentions.
The International Court of Justice was established on 26 June 1945, under the UN Charter, signed in San Francisco, and replaced the Permanent Court of International Justice. Its headquarters are located in the Dutch city of The Hague.
