GCC states reiterate the implementation of Arab Liaison Committee’s commitments on Syria
The foreign ministers of Arab Gulf states reiterate at the conclusion statement of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) during its 161st session in Riyadh the importance of implementing the commitments of Arab Laison Committee on Syria outlined in the Amman Statement in May 2023.
The statement is looking forward to resume the work of Syrian Constitutional Committee and support UN’s efforts to reach a political solution in Syria in accordance with the UNSCR 2254.
The statement supported the efforts of UN envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, and the exerted efforts to care for the Syrian refugees and displaced. It also supported their safe and voluntary return to Syria in accordance with the international standards and rejected any attempts to impose demographic changes in Syria.
The statement praised the role of Qatar state in the Donors’ Conference for Syria held in Brussels on last May 27, pledging $75 million in addition to its contribution over the previous years. The GCC also lauded the aid provided by all states of the GCC to support the humanitarian efforts in the favor of the brotherly Syrian people.
The statement stressed the importance of supporting the efforts of the Arab Ministerial Liaison Committee regarding the Syrian crisis, and implementing the commitments outlined in the Amman Statement and the Cairo Statement.
The statement condemned the repeated Israeli attacks on Syria, considering them a violation of international law and Syria’s sovereignty. It also condemned targeting the Iranian consulate building in Damascus. The statement praised Saudi Arabia’s decision to appoint an ambassador to Damascus.
The former US envoy to Syria, James Jeffrey, previously said that the countries which reinstated the Assad regime to the Arab League and normalized with it were frustrated as Damascus had not taken any serious steps for a political solution in Syria, or the return of refugees.
