The first decision of Biden’s new administration concerning the Syrians in America
The administration of the US President, Joe Biden, issued a decision to extend the residency of Syrians in the United States for a period of 18 months, as the first decision on Syrians in America.
Acting US Secretary of Homeland Security David Pecowski said: “His country extended the temporary protection status for Syrian immigrants for a period of 18 months, in a step within its broader program in favor of immigration.
In a press statement, Pikowski said that his country has carefully studied the latest developments in Syria and consulted with the relevant American institutions in this regard.
He added, “It was decided to extend the temporary protection period granted to Syrians,” noting that nearly 7 thousand Syrians benefit from temporary protection in his country.
The latest decision allows Syrians with temporary protection status to continue to reside legally in the United States until September 30, 2022. The temporary protection period for Syrians who obtained it in the United States was supposed to end on March 31.
The US Congress established the Temporary Immigrant Protection System in 1990 and provides foreign nationals with a work permit with an 18-month suspension of deportation, and residence permits are granted to immigrants due to a natural disaster or armed conflict that makes returning to their countries dangerous, such as Syrians who plan to stay in the United States temporarily.
