Anas Al-Abdeh: The Assad regime is the only obstruction to the political process in Syria
The head of the Syrian negotiating committee, Anas al-Abdah, sent a letter to the UN Security Council today, Thursday, in which he said: “The Assad regime is the only obstruction to the political process in Syria.”
In his message, Al-Abdeh added that the Security Council must push for the implementation of Resolution 2254 in all of its provisions, as it is the internationally responsible party.
He explained: “The regime’s disruption of the Constitutional Committee’s path will make its continuation in this way difficult,” noting that “resuming meetings requires a specific methodology and mechanism of action, and the system’s commitment to the tasks and mandate of the committee.
In his message, Al-Abdeh stressed the need for the Security Council to fulfill its responsibilities towards finding a mechanism to fully implement UN Resolution (2254) without delay.
And he called on the Security Council to start with the file of political transitional governance, and not to waste time that is not in the interest of the Syrian people, “rather, it serves the Assad regime.”
The head of the negotiating body affirmed that “the elections that the regime will hold are illegal, and reconstruction will not take place until a political solution is reached, and that the only path is Resolution 2254 with all its decisions.”
The head of the coalition, Nasr al-Hariri, had previously sent a letter to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, in which he asked him to cut ties with the institutions that belong to the Assad regime.
