Qatar’s delegate to the United Nations affirms its country’s endeavor to end the suffering of the Syrian people

Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, Qatar’s permanent representative to the United Nations, said in a virtual session organized by the “National Coalition of Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces” in New York, that her country is working hard with international partners to contribute constructively to ending the Syrian “crisis”, according to what the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

According to the ministry, the permanent delegation of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, and the permanent missions of the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Turkey and Estonia participated in the session held on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the Syrian revolution (it began on March 15, 2011).

Al-Thani said, “Qatar will continue to work diligently to discuss possible ways, in cooperation with international partners, to contribute constructively to ending the Syrian crisis.”

“The tenth anniversary of the Syrian revolution reminds the world of the decade-long violence, the untold atrocities committed by the Assad regime, and the consequences of the horrific human losses,” she added.

She continued, “It has become more clear that the crisis cannot be resolved through violence, but only through a political process led by the United Nations that would achieve the legitimate rights of the Syrian people and preserve the unity and independence of Syria,” calling for the “necessity of supporting the Constitutional Committee to fulfill it.”

She stressed “the need for confidence-building measures, including the protection of human rights, and to urgently address the issue of detainees.”

In December 2015, the UN Security Council passed Resolution 2254, approving a plan for a ceasefire in Syria, holding talks between the Assad regime and the opposition, forming a unity government, and holding free and fair elections.
