Denmark intends to take back its citizens from Syria
Today, Wednesday, the Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yepi Kofud, said, “The human security situation in the Syrian camps has deteriorated.
This applies especially to Al-Hol camp, which is witnessing a shortage of food and medical care.
This came in a press conference about the latest humanitarian developments in the Syrian camps, which include a number of foreign and Danish citizens.
On Tuesday, the Danish government announced that it intends to return 19 Danish children to jihadists and three of their mothers, due to the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in the camps in which they are held in Syria, after it has long refused to take back any of its citizens who have links to the “state” organization.
This decision is considered the first of its kind and came after the issuance of a report by the committee charged with studying the conditions for the return of Danish nationals in a file that raised divisions in European capitals.
These 19 children range in age from one to 14 years, and they are currently in the al-Hol and Roj camps in northeastern Syria, in an area under the control of Kurdish forces.
Since October 2019, an administrative decision to withdraw Danish citizenship from jihadists who left the country to fight abroad has become possible since October 2019, provided that they hold another nationality, as deputies in Denmark’s parliamentary majority expressed their concern about the deteriorating humanitarian situation and the potential for extremism of these children, and forced the government on changing its stance, rejecting the return of any Danish nationals.
