A Syrian youth receives the “Pride of Britain Award 2021”
The Syrian youth, Hassan Al-Khawam, was given the Pride of Britain award, for his efforts in helping refugees integrate into British society.
The Irish newspaper Belfast Life, in a report, talked about the young Hassan before he fled to Northern Ireland, where he resides today.
Hassan and his family eventually fled Syria for a better life in Britain, and with the help of the Prince’s Trust, he learned English and is now helping other refugees here.
And he will be honored at the Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Awards in partnership with TSB for his work.
Although Hassan is still trying to keep happy childhood memories in Syria, the sounds of war are hard to dismiss.
Hassan said about his exams: “There was a bomb and we heard gunshots,”. It’s scary. I just want my best score because my dream is to go to university.“But those experiences were difficult for me emotionally, it was a difficult and scary time.
He continued “I know we have to leave Syria to save our lives.”
But when Syria collapsed under the civil war, Hassan’s family decided to leave with Hassan and his seven-year-old sister.They lived as refugees in Jordan before being taken to Northern Ireland.
Hassan has since co-founded NI Hyatt, helping integrate other refugees. His efforts have now earned him the Prince’s Trust Young Achiever of the Year Award.
“At first it was very difficult in different countries, different cultures and languages,” Hassan said.“I tried my best to integrate. I need to learn English but can’t afford it. ”A friend told Hassan about the prince’s trust in helping pay for language tuition.
He has helped at least 44 refugee families. “I want to help others as I have done as I know how it can make all the difference,” Hassan said.
He discovered that he had won the Young Achiever Award after being surprised by Prince Charles when he came up to receive the Pride of Britain invitation from TV presenter Christine Bleakley at St James’s Palace in the city center of London.
