The Syrian Constitutional Committee concludes the eighth round of its meetings
The Syrian Constitutional Committee concluded the work of the eighth round of its meetings, which took place over 5 days in Geneva, Switzerland.
The office of the UN envoy, Geir Pedersen, confirmed in a statement after the meeting that disagreements continued during the meeting, and there was a possibility to meet at a common point on other issues.
Pedersen appreciated the tone and manner of consultation at the table, as Pedersen headed the last two sessions on the last day of the Committee’s meetings.
The Special Envoy appreciated “the tone and nature of the dialogue at the table but drew attention to the slow progress of negotiations and the inability to reach concrete agreements on issues that need progress.”
Pearson stressed that there is consensus between him and the co-chairs of all delegations, pointing to the need to speed up procedures, reach solutions, and follow the course.
Pedersen called on members of the Constitutional Committee to “work in the spirit of reconciliation and work on drafting constitutional texts that would enjoy the support of the Syrian people.”
The statement revealed that the co-chairs agreed to hold the ninth round of the Syrian Constitutional Committee meetings between 25 and 29 July.
The seventh round of meetings was held from March 21-25, and did not result in new developments, and presented four constitutional principles.
