United Nations: Security Council resolution is the only way to guarantee peace and stability in Syria
Today, Wednesday, the United Nations said, “Security Council Resolution 2254 is the only way to meet the legitimate aspirations of all Syrians and to ensure peace and stability in Syria.”
This came in the speech of the Turkish diplomat, Volkan Bozkir, the current president of the United Nations General Assembly, during a meeting of the association’s members on the human rights situation in Syria.
Participants in the meeting were Secretary-General of Human Rights Ilse Brandis Kierez, Paulo Sergio Pinheiro, Chairman of the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria, and Syrian activists.
Bozkir stressed, “The international community must strive for a permanent ceasefire in Syria and for humanitarian aid to reach an estimated 13 million Syrians in need of assistance, 12.4 million of whom are suffering the worst food security crisis in the history of the conflict.”
He continued, “A political process must be supported in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2254, as this is the only way to meet the legitimate aspirations of all Syrians and to ensure peace and stability in Syria.”
Bozkir also added, “We must all demonstrate our strong commitment to the independence, unity and territorial integrity of Syria, and to support the process facilitated by the United Nations and the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General (Geir Pedersen).”
Resolution 2254 issued on December 18, 2015, calls on all parties to stop launching attacks against civilian targets, and asks the United Nations to bring the two parties together to enter formal negotiations and hold elections under the supervision of the United Nations, with the aim of conducting a political transformation.
