The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons announced that France has allocated a sum of one million euros to support the fund to finance the activities of the organization’s missions in Syria, including the conduct of independent investigations.
The statement confirmed that France’s voluntary contribution was made after an agreement between the permanent representative of Paris to the organization, “Louis Vassy”, and the director general of the organization, “Fernando Arias”, at its headquarters in “The Hague”.
He added that this fund “finances the activities of the verification group” regarding the Assad regime’s announcement to dispose of its chemical weapons, and also finances a “fact-finding mission on chemical weapons in Syria,” noting that “the organization’s financing fund supports the activities of its missions and finances the implementation of emergency operations.
Exclusively related to Syria ”.
The statement added: “This contribution will help the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons to continue its vital work in Syria, as its missions face many challenges that require coordinated international responses to ensure compliance with the rules and principles of the Chemical Weapons Convention.”
For his part, “Louis Vassi,” the permanent representative of Paris in the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, said, “This step from my country will allow the mechanisms of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons to conduct independent investigations in Syria, and we will remain firmly determined to end the threat of chemical weapons use there.”
It is noteworthy that the Assad regime used chemical weapons in Syria repeatedly and its last attacks were on April 8, 2020, affecting several populated areas.
