US National Security Adviser: Biden is determined to withdraw from Afghanistan
US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan confirmed that Biden is determined to withdraw the US military from Afghanistan.
Sullivan said that President Biden does not want the United States to be a part to the Afghan conflict in its third decade, noting that the rapid progress of the “Taliban” movement in the country is due to the failure of the Afghan army in the confrontation.
“The president believes it is time for the Afghan army to defend his country, after two decades of investing, training, and spending billions of dollars on it by the US government,” he added.
He stressed that his country was not able to give the Afghan army the determination to confront the “Taliban”, despite all the training and billions of dollars spent on it, “in the end they decided not to confront the Taliban.”
Sullivan considered that the worst for his country is sending thousands of soldiers to fight in a civil war, in light of lack desire of the Afghan army to fight and confront the Taliban.
He stressed that Biden is determined on his decision to withdraw the US military from Afghanistan at the end of this month.
The statement of the US National Security Adviser, Jake Sullivan, during an interview with the American “ABC” channel, about the latest developments in Afghanistan, according to the Associated Press.
Many countries have begun evacuating their diplomats from Afghanistan since last Sunday, after the Taliban movement took control of large areas of the country, including the capital, Kabul.
The Taliban took control of almost all of Afghanistan in about a week, despite billions of dollars spent by the United States and NATO over nearly 20 years to build up Afghan security forces.
The movement had expanded its reach in Afghanistan to coincide with the start of the last stage of the process of withdrawing US forces, which is scheduled to be completed at the end of this month.
