A Turkish-Russian meeting in Qatar to discuss the latest developments in the Syrian file
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu discussed with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, and Qatar’s Foreign Minister Abdul Rahman Al Thani, today, Thursday, the latest developments in the Syrian file in the Qatari capital, Doha.
Ihsanoglu said: “We started a new consultative process on the Syrian issue with the foreign ministers of Qatar and Russia, and discussed the issue of fighting terrorist organizations in Syria, and the need to increase efforts to double humanitarian aid to Syria, especially in the face of the Coronavirus.”
He added, “The Syrian regime must be pressured to break the stalemate in the current situation, since ending the conflict in Syria is only valid through finding a permanent political solution.”
Ihsanoglu said, “Turkey continues to cooperate with Qatar to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Syria and reach a political solution, and the next meeting will be held in Turkey.”
For his part, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said, “This is the first meeting at the ministerial level between the three countries, and we found a convergence of views with Qatar and Turkey on some issues in Syria.”
Lavrov continued: “All the international players’ movements must respect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Syria, and the joint statement confirms the keenness to fight terrorism and confront the plans that threaten the region, ”as he put it.
“We will participate in international efforts to secure the voluntary and safe return of refugees to Syria,” the Russian foreign minister affirmed.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, Muhammad bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani, stated that they affirmed their support for the negotiations of the Syrian Constitutional Committee, the safe and voluntary return of refugees, the unity of the Syrian territories, and the absence of a military solution to the crisis.
Al-Thani stressed, “We discussed developments in the Syrian file and the possibility of allowing humanitarian aid to reach Syria,” noting that “there is an urgent need to alleviate the poor living conditions that Syrians are going through due to the crisis.”
This meeting is considered the first of its kind at the ministerial level of the three countries (Russia, Turkey and Qatar), to discuss the latest developments in the Syrian file.
